Migration from SQL Server 2005 to SQL Server 2008 ?

  • Hi all,

I was assigned a task to migrate a SQL 2005 Production Server to another existing SQL 2008 Production Server. Can anyone explain me the complete procedure & things to be kept in mind while migrating the entire SQL 2005 Production Server to already existing another SQL 2008 Production Server ?

    Thanx in advance..,

  • Have you looked in the Articles section of this site? There are numerous, well documented steps and checks like the one written by Banyardi Schmardi linked below:

I doubt you will find anyone having enough time to write up all of the checks and then steps to perform a full upgrade within this forum, but a little more digging around on your part will yield you all the results you could need.

    Good luck

Thanks for your reply, i have been searching in SQLServerCentral for a while but didnt find forums/posts concerned to my Question, "Migrating to already Existing another SQL 2008 Production Server"..,

  • Can anyone tell me whether we can migrate the Linked Servers while Migrating SQL 2005 Server to an existing SQL 2008 Server. And if we can, please tell me the procedure to do that..,

    Thanks in advance..,

  • I wasn't the best of help on your first question, so let me try to make it up. The linked server information, along with Maintenance Plans and SQL Agent Jobs, or SSIS packages are all stored in the MSDB database. In my most recent migration, I detached and moved the MSDB database (saved me a couple of hours of work).

I don't think its advisable to detach & attach System Databases as i read it in some other forums in SQLServerCentral itself.....If am wrong, just ignore this post..,
