Using SSMS 2005 to connect to 2008 database

  • Hi,

One of my users is having an issue connecting from SSMS 2005 to a SQL 2008 Instance - im a bit confused as i can connect fine via 2005 SSMS.

He gets a message with the error:

'This version of Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio can only be used to connect to SQL Server 200 and SQL Server 2005 servers."

Im pretty sure it will be to do with add-ons, he probably has an earlier version of the client tools - how can i find this out for sure..

    any help appreciated.

    Ta

  • Help..About on both SSMS instances will give you versions.

  • Thanks.. i must be going blind. thought i checked Help tab and couldnt find the 'About' section.

His version is base 2005 - 9.00.1399 so i think the client tools need to be upgraded 🙂

  • You need to apply a service pack. I can't recall which one, but applying SP3 is safe enough.

  • Yea - this is what i have suggested - SP3 - will take the user to 9.00.4035 which is good enough and tested client version for using sql 2008 instances.
