Unable to delete backup

  • Hello everyone.

Got an interesting situation that I haven't been able to figure out on my own and was hoping that some here might have some thoughts.

On Friday, my maintenance plan for backing up our transaction logs started to fail. The reason was the maintenance plan to clean up task that deleted old log backups. For some reason it is unable to delete one of the log backups.

I went and found the file in the file system and tried deleting it manually. Can't do that either. Get an error message that says the file is being used by another process and that I have to end that process before I am able to delete it.

Issue is I can't find anything that is using it.

Anyone have any thoughts on the matter?

    Thanks,

    Fraggle

  • I'd check the log to see if you had a backup failure corresponding to the file create time. A failure might have keep the file from closing. If so, a reboot should clear the file lock and let you delete it.

  • I'm having the same issue. Did you find the cause ?

We're using Redgate, just upgraded to ver 6.

Edit: I restarted the SQLBackup service on the server being backed up, and indications are that fixed it.
