scom System Center Server Management for sql

  • Has anybody used “SCOM” System Center Server Management from Microsoft to help manage their sql databases. One of our vendors recommended using it since we are going to use scom to monitor some other servers that are not running sql server. I am a bit confused as to what version(standard, enterprise???), cost and if it worthwhile.

    Thanks

  • We have SCOM where I work but I haven't had the opportunity to work with our network admins in seeing how we could use it for monitoring SQL Server. Hopefully we may get around to it in the near future.

  • we use MOM (the version before SCOM) to monitor SQL and will be upgrading to SCOM. Its a good enterprise level monitoring tool, but expensive. Does threshold monitoring, error alerting and you can do your own custom scripts. We are alerted by emails.

If you have a lot of instances to monitor a tool such as this is a godsend (actually a necessity). you will probably need a site 'expert' to configure it and support it for you.
