  New install on XP Pro Version 2002, SP3.

  Local machine, no domain, no workgroup.

  First attempt to log into SSMS receives

  Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 18456.

  This is my first attempt at installing any SQL Server instance

  on my home machine.

  I had got this some time back. I had done stuff similar to this. It may work for you too.
