Attempting to run the install for client components only. SQL Server was previously installed.
This machine has SQL express and Developer Editions installed. I'm attempting to run the client components install from the Developer Edition Media.
I get the following error:
A There was an unexpected failure during the setup wizard.
You may review the setup logs and/or click the help button for more information.
Message ID 50000
Explanation
An attempt was made to install (or update) SQL Server Native Client on a computer where SQL Server Native Client is already installed, and where the existing installation was from an MSI file that was not named sqlncli.msi.
User Action
To resolve this error, uninstall the existing version of SQL Server Native Client. To prevent this error, do not install SQL Server Native Client from an MSI file that is not named sqlncli.msi.
Add/Remove programs shows the client components installed, but sqlwb.exe does not exist.
I removed the client components from A/R programs and attempted to reinstall but got the same error message.
I had this same issue on another server (can't remember if SQL Express was on that one) and after uninstalling each component in the order listed here: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/forums/en-US/sqlsetupandupgrade/thread/50164862-ef20-4758-9c7a-0d6ae8f1b3f9/ I ended up with the system showing SQL as installed, when running the installer, and Add/Remove programs not showing SQL as installed.
Does anyone know the correct way to resolve this nagging issue?

I uninstalled the native client today an then ran the workstation componets installer from the cd. This reinstalled native componenets and then raised the same error again when it got to the workstation components install.

I rebuilt this machine and am getting the error again. Everything is installing except workstation components. The kicker is that I used the same media on a differant server earlier today and it worked just fine...There must be a .Net framework conflict or somthing.

i have just got around the problem by installing SQL 2005 SP2. Initially I was installing 2005 SP0. 😛
