For the past 2 days I have tried everything I can think of to find and open the Adventure works database. I downloaded from CodePlex, however I am unable to locate the actual mdf file. I am trying to learn the program and follow the online tutorial, however, I currently do not have access to an actual server, so I am very stumped on how to proceed. When I try using the Windows for SQL Compact Edition I am unable to locate the Adventure works database. I even tried to attach withiout success
Can anyone assist me in moving forward and using the AW database only with the tutorial?
Thanks,

From codeplex you normally get as setup file. You need to select the sample and database option at the time of execution.
Hope this helps,

I didnot had this problem at all. I have successfully installed Adventure works, even though I didnot had SQL Server running. I didnot attach database for this reason. Any how, lets try to fix it 🙂
1)http://www.codeplex.com/Project/Download/FileDownload.aspx?ProjectName=MSFTDBProdSamp Link for downloading sample database
2) when you execute, important may need to have admin rights, I guess. It will prompt for the path, default would be where SQL Server Data is installed, in my computer its
C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\MSSQL\Data
3) Run SSMS, are you running on a machine with Admin rights ? then in SSMS you have option to attach database.
For your error, this might help: http://www.codeplex.com/MSFTDBProdSamples/WorkItem/View.aspx?WorkItemId=4587
Hope this gets fixed this time, if it get fixed in other way. Let me know.

You have to have SQL Server running. I do not believe Compact Edition will work.
You can download SQL Server Express, which is the free version, if you have no other.
