SQL 2005 installation on server changed to domain controller (DCPROMO)

  • Hi there,

Just wondering if anyone can offer any advice to a major issue I am struggling with. We have a brand new windows 2003 R2 server up and running and we then installed SQL 2005 server. After joining the server to our domain we then needed to turn the server into a domain controller. I run DCpromo on the server and all seemed to go ok.

The problems started to arise when i was trying to setup the backup jobs and maintenance plans. After reading a lot of articles on the net i decided that i needed to upgrade SQL to SP 2.

I downloaded the service pack through microsoft update and i tried to run it. It installed ok for all of the different components but it gave an error saying could not upgrade the database engine. Here's the version numbers:

    Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio9.00.3042.00

    Microsoft Analysis Services Client Tools2005.090.3042.00

Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC)2000.086.3959.00 (srv03_sp2_rtm.070216-1710)

    Microsoft MSXML2.6 3.0 6.0

    Microsoft Internet Explorer7.0.5730.13

    Microsoft .NET Framework2.0.50727.1433

    Operating System5.2.3790

The problem is that now i am trying to backup and remove old database files using the maintenance plan wizar and I am getting errors. I suspect this is down to the management tools being a different version than the database engine. When i cut and paste the SQL and run the query I am getting parameter errors. These parameter errors seem to be for options that have appeared following the upgrade.

I also need to run sql as a domain user. When i try and change the user over and restart the server the services do not start until i change the user back to the local accounts. I suspect this problem is down to the DCPROMO command removing the local users from the box. Any ideas?

Anyone any ideas on how i can get the database engine upgraded to the latest version?

    Thanks

  • I managed to sort it. Thanks for the help

I managed to stop all of the SQL services. Remove the SQL apps from the control panel. I then renamed the installation folders and made a few registry changes.

I was then able to reinstall a clean version of SQL and run SQL as a domain account. Following this i was then able to install SP2 and update SQL. Seems to be running ok so far.

Just trying to find the sql manual uninstallation notes on the net. Cannot seem to track them down at the moment!
