Hi-
I have a client machine with sql 2000 workstation components installed (no db engine or as engine). Can I apply sp4 upgrade to this client in hopes of updating the workstation components -- going forward this client machine will be talking
to a sp4 instance of sql server.
Thanks for your help.

You should be able to. I just use MS's update page for that kind of thing.

What do you mean MS's update page? I have the full Database Components SP4 download, should I not use that? If I unzip the SP4 download and fire-up the setup.bat file shouldn't it just update whats on the client machine? Or is there something else I need from this update page?
Thanks

http://www.update.microsoft.com
From there, you can have it check your computer for needed updates and it will update the client tools if it needs to.
The service pack will probably work, too, but I haven't tried that.

The service pack will work. And, trust me, it's a good thing to keep the client as patched as the server, however you do it.
GSquared - thanks for the tip. I didn't realize that the MS update would also do SQL, I guess I mistakenly assumed it would only do OS related updates. - One more thing, I saw a WSquared on this site, a relative of yours????

Haven't run into WSquared. No clue who that would be.
I have run into another DBA who likes to use GSquared. And in high school, I knew a guy who went by A-squared. But no WSquared. Least not that I'm familiar with.
