attachment table moving attachments to another disk.

  • Hi all,

I am trying to workout how to move a table with attachment to another disk on the same server,

what are the steps to do this, I have not had any involvement in moving tables to another disk before so this is my first time, any help would be great,

    Thanks in Advance.

    Frank.

This site is excellent!! brilliant for a newbie who hasn't a clue!!

  • Got a script, to do this but not sure what i need to change to get it to work correctly

    /*==================================================================================

NAME: Move a table between filegroups

DESCRIPTION: This script moves a user-given table from one file group to

another, where both file groups and the table name are

specified by the user. The user can also specify whether all

    non-clustered indexes, and/or table constraints (e.g., primary

key, unique constraints) should be moved to the target file group,

by setting the script variables @MoveAllNonClusteredIndexes

    and @MovePKAndAllUniqueConstraints to 1, respectively.

The algorithm used by the script is the following:

    1. Check that both file groups provided by the user exist,

    and that the table exists.

    2. Check that the target file group is not read-only.

    3. Move the table to the new file group. This is done as

now described: The content of a table always resides on the

data pages of the clustered index, if a clustered index

indeed exists for the table (the script covers all possible

    table indexes/constraint/keys scenarios!).

Assume that a clustered index (CI) exists for the table:

The script checks whether the CI is also a primary key (PK),

or a unique constraint (UQ), or a unique index (UI).

If it is one of the above - all foreign key (FK) constraints

(if there are any) are dropped from the table (and are later

recreated). Once the FKs are dropped, the CI is dropped as well,

and then recreated on the target file group while maintaining

all of its original properties (i.e., the CI is created as a PK,

UQ, or UI, as it was defined prior to the move to the new filegroup),

and the foreign keys are recreated as well, with all of their

previous properties (e.g., ON CASECADE, NOT FOR REPLICATION, etc.).

If the CI is non-unique, then it is simply dropped and recreated

    on the target file group.

If the original table does not have a CI, then a CI is created

for the table, on the target file group, and is later dropped

(i.e., table data is moved to the target file group, and the CI is

then removed). In order to create a clustered index, the script

checks whether there is an identity column on the table, and

applies a (non-unique) CI on the identity column. If an identity

does not exists, the script checks whether a primary key or a

unique constraint is defined for the table, and creates the

(non-unique) clustered index on the PK/UQ column(s). If neither

an identity, nor a PK/UQ exist for the table, the script creates

a new identity column for the table, applies the CI on it, and

then drops both the CI and the identity column.

Once the CI (i.e., table data) is moved to the new filegroup, the

script checks the bits @MoveAllNonClusteredIndexes and

@MovePKAndAllUniqueConstraints. If either one is set to 1,

the script collects the index/PK/UQ info, again drops (and later

recreates) all FKs associated with these objects, and then

drops the index/PK/UQ objects and recreates them on the target

file group. If any FKs were mapped to these objects they are

restored to their original settings (with their associated

    properties, as explained above).

    Notes:

    1. The PAD_INDEX property of all moved index is maintained, when

the indexes are moved to the taget filegroup. However, the

FILLFACTOR takes the default settings of the server (see

    sp_configure to check server configuration).

    2. The TEXT/NTEXT/IMAGE columns, which are not stored

on the clustered index data pages, are not moved to the

target file group, by the simple reason that in order to move

TEXT/NTEXT/IMAGE columns to another filegroup - the entire

    table needs to be recreated.
