Backup tool

  • I am looking for a tool that would make a smaller disk space because at the moment I have very large data to back up daily (210g) and I need a tool that would be more manageable and also less time consuming

  • Several very good third party tools. Check this out (and search this site for user postings):

  • Red gate, quest, Hyperbac, all have good solutions. Test them all, check out the features and support and see what you think. They all fit slightly different niches.

Disclosure: I work for Red Gate.

  • We use Idera SQLSafe. While it is not perfect, it was the best solution, in my testing, when we were looking for an enterprise solution in 2004. It continues to improve and we have 109 SQL Servers using it now. Compression ratios we experience are in the range of 90+%. For instance, one of my PeopleSoft DBs, which is 253G uncompressed, backup up to 20G with SQLSafe. this backup took 55 minutes, backing up straight to a network share.

I have not reviewed the other products lately, so I do not know if they have improved enough to be considered on the Enterprise level that SQLSafe is.

When I reviewed the Redgate SQL Backup product, back in 2004, I found it to be good, but geared towards a small shop, with just a few servers. It's lack of Enterprise management capability kept it from being considered in the long term for my company.

  • I would recommend IDERA or LiteSpeed. That or wait for 2008

  • I've used both Litespeed and SQLSafe. Very good products, great compression, speed vs. native and encryption. I've read about Hyperbac and currently use Veritas NetBackup. The jury is still out on this one. I can do backups and restores, I'm still trying to get comfortable with it. Some awesome products out there. As Kevin stated, if you can wait for 2008, that may be the best (cheapest??) option available. Download all the evals of the third party tools and make the best decision based on need and price.
