SQL Server 7.0 and 2000 vs 2005 database size Clarification

  • Hi all,

Database size in 2000 is higher than when we compare with 2005.

Please see the below MSDN links for your views.

    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa933149(SQL.80).aspx -- SQL2000

    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143432.aspx -- SQL2005

    Is it true?

    thanks & regards

  • To be honest, I simply think that the number for SQL 7.0/ 2000 are worng. The max database size is determined by the max number of database files and the max filesize. The max filesize is depending on the OS and the filesystem. For Windows 2003 and NTFS the max filesize is 16 TB. The article about 2000 states a max filesize of 32 TB but I'm not aware of any version of OS which support this.

Any how I think it's pretty hypothetical to worry about if you're DB can grow to 1,048,516 TB or just about 524,258 TB.
