Hi - I have an urgent request to install SQL Server 2016 service pack 2. I would be really grateful if someone could give me some advice on the best practice approach for installing this as it's something I haven't done before so have concerns about doing something wrong & causing additional issues.
I would appreciate help in determining the correct version of service pack 2 to install & whether or not this is an easy process to perform. Just looking for some reassurance, as the process is alien to me.
Any help or advice is very much appreciated.
Kind Regards
Dax

Check here to see which downloads you need: https://sqlserverupdates.com/
I'm concerned about the urgency of this request though; if this is a Production change and you haven't done it before, do run through it in a non-Production environment first.

It's straightforward to apply a service pack but as Beatrix has said do it on a test environment first. It's very unlikely that a service pack will cause any problems but it may be prudent to take a snapshot of the server before applying it to production in case you do need to rollback. You will also need a maintenance window as from memory you will need to restart the SQL Server service.
Thanks

Thank you for your reply - I have already advised that I will not undertake this task until it has been installed successfully on a non-production environment, as I'm fully aware of the high risk factors associated with this.
Many thanks
