Hi,
I'm just starting to explore the option of compressing our db backups to save some space and increase our backup and restore times. In my testing, I'm seeing some great improvements for full backups. My question is (and it might be dumb), does it apply to backups of system databases too? Also, will diffs and t-log backups benefit too? I've been Googling for a while but I can't find a definitive answer. The only scenario I'm sure about is full backups of user databases.

The best way to find out is to try it! From my experience, the answer to all your questions is yes.

I agree. I was able to quickly tell with my full backups of my user databases as they were a 1/5 of the size. However, my transaction log backups are so small (and they're incremental as you know), so it's a little more difficult to determine. Not impossible though. Actually, it looks like msdb..backupmediaset contains that information.
