Backing up Symmetric Encryption Key question

  • Hello,

probably a simple question for all of you, this is part of steps of recovery process and maybe migration/expansion.

I just installed and Configured a Power BI report server, and going to take a backup of the Symmetric Encryption Key, but.... if I take a backup of it, do I still need to take a backup of it later on, even if we make more data sources or add in more reports etc.? or will the encryption key 1 time backup before all the reports/datasources gets added in be fine? or should I put it on a SQL job schedule to do it daily to do a reoccurring backup so any changes/add in etc. will be backed up for migration, recovery or even expansion?

    thanks in advance

  • One time backup is fine. You don't need to back it up again when reports, data sources are changed or added.

  • great thank you

  • Also Sue, do you know if backing up or even creating an encryption key is necessary at all? or can you still have a good recovery just by restoring the ReportServer databases?

  • It creates one by default. You wouldn't need to back it up just like you wouldn't need to back up a database for it to work. But if you need to reset passwords, restore to another server, change the service account, recover the reporting databases from a disaster, rename the server and others I can't think of...those all need you to restore the encryption key. So yes it's needed if you want to ensure recovery.
