upgrading SQL Server 2016 express to 2016 Enterprise

  • I am considering upgrading SQL Server 2016 express to 2016 Enterprise.
Is it possible to just upgrade, without creating a different instance/server name
and keeping all databases that I currently have in Express version?

Yes. Edition upgrades are done using setup.exe (SQL Server Installation Center), select maintenance and then Edition Upgrade.

  • If you wade through this document, you will find that this is a supported upgrade, so the short answer to your question is 'yes'.

  • You can go up in term of edition, but you can't go down.

I would be curious to know a business case that requires an upgrade from Express to Entreprise.
