Server (OS and Sql) restore process with AG's

  • Hi everyone,
I am fully over how AG's work, backups, restores, fallover etc etc..
The question asked of me by the boss is

If we lose the VM that is running SQL server primary and perform a restore of the OS and SQL restore of backups taken using ola.hallengren.com
what state would this leave the AG? for example would all the setting of the AG come back with the restore of the system databases ?

All servers are running on VMware

I have been looking for a best process around restoring the system from backup with AG's but so far not found any

  • If you lose a VM and you have AG configured in automatic fail over your secondary will be a primary.
if you cannot bring up the VM then you will need to restore from your VM backup. Your VMware admin should be taking backups of VM's.
When a VM is restored everything up until the VM backup time will be restored BUT your primary will not be able to sync.
All you have to do is take a backup of Primary and restore on secondary along with tlogs and join the AG.
    And then fail back.

  • You might get lucky and just need to apply tlog backups. Otherwise, do not take a full backup on the secondary server, which is now a primary replica. Take a differential first and tlog backups. Do not run a full backup until you secured the diff backup. You will then have the option to apply the diff + tlogs if faster.
