Honest response about how you did? Sure! I did know about SQL Edge before PASS (which I unfortunately couldn't attend to, again) without being pre-briefed by Microsoft. In all honesty it wasn't news for months anymore.
My conclusion would be: Could've been better, considering you have been pre-briefed much better actually. No hard feelings really just honest feedback.

Lol, I'm not really pre-briefed. I know about things, but I don't know what will release when. For example, I knew about Query Store about 3 years before SQL Server 2016 released. Couldn't say anything about it, even as some initial preview demonstrations were made in 2015. Had no idea if it would release in SQL 2016.

As for keeping up, I think that reading announcements and keeping an eye on news isn't bad. It's just awareness, but topics that seem promising or valuable will get additional mentions over time. Lots of bloggers, articles, etc. That's somewhat how I've approached SQL Server Edge. Read some random things across months, and wait for some news.
The keynotes for large events are good places where you get a bunch of things mentioned in a short period of time if you watch.
Really, the big thing for you to learn if you are looking for basic DBA stuff is to learn T-SQL fairly well. We have a few stairways to help you, but learn these concepts. They really help you as a dev or dba.
