  Oops. clumsy sentence construction alert.

  You wrote "As a result, I try to avoid wasting time and taking advantage of what I have when I can.".

  You don't really want to avoid taking advantage (I assume).

  Much better to write "As a result, I try to avoid wasting time and to take advantage of what I have when I can."
