Can you pass a total value from a subreport to a main report? I am not finding much luck on the interweb

I'm pretty sure that's not possible. I avoid sub-reports like the plague that they all too often are. Change your overall design to eliminate the need for it.

Can't you just drop a tablix inside your report and refer to a textbox on it? Of course, you'd have to merge the two datasets...
