SQL 2017 Enterprise Licensing

    Hi,

    we are migrating 2012 dbs to sql 2017. customer asking whether to proceed with 2 core enterprise Licensing or more?

    I am not having any idea in this regard. Can you please guide what and all things to have to keep in mind in suggesting the SQL licensing purchase? Windows server 2016 is 10 core . shall i suggest SQL  2 core enterprise licensing? or more ?

    How this works actually?It is little urgent. Once i confirm the customer with 2 or more core licensing then he will purchase.

    Please help.

    Licensing is done per core so if the server is 10 core then you will need to buy 10 licenses. However, what you need to do first is speak to your licensing vendor to make sure you are buying the correct number as it can be a bit of a minefield.

    Core based licensing is sold as a minimum of 4 cores.

    If there are 10 cores in the server (that's a weird number of cores, BTW), and this is going to run SQL Server, you will need to license all 10 cores.

    Again, to reiterate what others have said, please talk to your vendor or Microsoft about licensing.
