We have a process which runs at night and we take differential backups at different steps. We take 5 differentials.
Last night SQL Server logs show that 5th differential is done and I can see the .bak file. But it did not write anything into backupmediafamily table in msdb databases. I see an entry in backupmediafamily table in msdb for the remaining 4 backups.
I looked at the backupset table and I see the corresponding row has media_set_id (which was created for 5th differential 3 days back).
This happened in sequence for two nights. Any ideas on this??

Have you actually checked that the backups are good - 'cos that's what I'd do first. I'd also check the sql and event logs just in case you're running low on disk space

I have restored the backups on a different server and it worked great !
I have lots of free space on the disk.
