SP4

  • Hi,

We have 9 SQL Server instances on a Windows 2000 server.  When we installed SP4 on one instance, we go to install the SP4 on the next instance, but get a message saying "a previous program installation created pending file operations - you must restart the computer before running setup".  We don't want to keep restarting the server after each service pack installation.

Is there anyway to avoid restarting the server in between instance installations?  We have tried stopping all instances, but this didn't work..

    tks.

  • Also....it only seems to want to restart after those instances which had SP3a, we have one instance that did not have any service packs, just the base install, and that one did not need a restart after installation...?

    tks.

  • It should only do this after the first SP4 install.

After that, in-use system dlls have been upgraded and will not be upgraded again.

    Hopefully

The install is checking this reg key:

    Key:   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager

    RegValue:   PendingFileRenameOperations

You could clear this until you reboot after the last instance... but your choice...
