Now I'm almost sure I know the answer here, but I thought I would just check. If we have SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition SP3a installed, can we install the Reporting Services Enterprise Edition without purchasing a SQL Server Enterprise license? Or if we only have a Standard Edition license for SQL Server can we only use the Standard edition of Reporting Services? Will the installation process even allow you to install Reporting Services Enterprise edition on a SQL Server Standard edition machine?

As far as I know, there is only one version of reporting services. You do not have to purchase a seperate license for Reporting Services unless you want to install the web service on a seperate server from the SQL Server. In that case, you have to purchase a SQL Server license for the web server.

There are two different editions of RS, Enterprise and Standard. My understanding is that you are licensed to run Enterprise edition only if you have an enterpise SQL license. Basically it's the same approach as with Analysis Services, if you want the features of the enterprise edition of the "free" product, you need to have paid for the enterprise edition of MSSQL. Maybe best to confirm on the Msft site or local reps?

Hey, learn something new everyday. it looks like the main differences between the two versions are mainly due to the diffewrences in SQL Server Enterprise and/or Windows Advance Server (mainly stuff like Web farms, etc.). There are only a couple of other differences that vary between the two.
