SQL Server 2014 Deprecated Features – Database Engine

Everyone looks at the new features when trying to determine when to upgrade from an older version of SQL Server to a newer release.  There are many factors to consider and for every environment certain features have a higher priority and need for implementation than others.  However, not everyone takes the time to look at what has been removed from the new release that may impact their current usage of the database.  Each release of SQL Server has features that are being removed in the next release or are labeled for removal in future releases. Before upgrading to SQL 2014 be sure to check what is being removed by looking at SQL Server 2012 information on deprecated features.

MSDN has two categories of features:

  • Features Not Supported in the Next Version of SQL Server
    • These features will not be available in the next release after SQL Server 2014 and you should not be leveraging these features in any current development work.
  • Features Not Supported in a Future Version of SQL Server
    • These features will be available in the release after SQL Server 2014 but may not be available in future releases.

For a full list of the features and categories see: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143729.aspx
