SQL Server Licensing wiht S/A

  • Hello SQL Server Guru,

I've been requested to work on SQL Server migration to new data center. And I came across with the term called S/A aka Software Assurance.

I have been told that to transfer SQL Server licenses you need to have Software Assurance (S/A) on the licenses else the licenses is not transferable. Is this true ?

  • Licensing is a pain.  Everyone has their own interpretation, even within Microsoft.  To get the "best" answer you should contact Microsoft or your software vendor.

Any answer given here is just opinion.
