AlwaysOn Availability Group installation order

  • Is there a proper order to client software installation when it comes to AlwaysOn Availability Groups?
    - installing directly to the primary replica, then creating the Availability Group & Listener, then repointing the software to the Listener
    vs
    - Creating the Availability Group and listener first, then installing the software directly to the listnener

To me it would make more sense to get the listener set up first and install directly to that so the client software wouldn't need to be modified.

    Thanks!

  • Hi ifilter,

You have to perform the installation first before you create listener and Availability Groups.

You may refer to the link below for the step by step Always On Availabilty Group Configuration.

Setup the Availability group and listener first . The client will be connecting to Listener , if that is not configured you have to give you primary SQL Server name in connection string which doesn't help in RO routing.

  • Thanks VastSQL and Ricky
