In my current environment, we are running DPM (Data Protection Manager) for all of our sql servers. I have been told by a few people that for some reason, making a manual .bak of a given Sql database is problematic with DPM in the picture, but none of them have any in depth answers as to why, and I cannot find much to support this.
Does anybody here know why this would be the case, and have any links to something to support whether there is something harmful in manually backing up a database that is under DPM protection or if there is nothing harmful?

If you do it without using the WITH COPY ONLY option, it's going to break the restore chain.
I'm a DBA.
I'm not paid to solve problems. I'm paid to prevent them.

I don't understand your question. Are you saying you want a manual backup without flagging it COPY ONLY or that you want to be able to take COPY ONLY manual backups?
