Self awareness is hard won and a journey that doesn’t end. Getting there for me – at least as far as I’ve gotten – was to let go of being defensive and being willing to see my weaknesses and flaws. Can’t say I have or will ever be able to fix them all, but I can work with them. Always felt like it took longer than it should have for me. Growth takes time, or we’d all be wise at 21! Congrats on taking a step forward, hope you have a good year.

Avoiding the “us vs them” mentality has helped quite a bit in my job. We collaborate earlier in the process, seeking advice from the DBA group before we submit anything to the production environment. Heck, we do that before we submit anything to the system test environment.

We have peer reviews and involve the production DBAs. We seek out their knowledge and what they feel would work best. We don’t expect them to do our work, but we want to do it in accordance with best practices. :)

That’s exactly the kind of collaboration I’m hoping to get to, but in reverse. We’re typically NOT engaged until it’s too late in the development process to make major changes, or sometimes not until something has reached production and is misbehaving. You reap what you sow, and unfortunately, we’ve sown the seeds that have earned us a reputation as being rigid and unapproachable.

I have a stubborn streak a mile wide, and when I know I’m right but you won’t listen, I’ll eventually reach a point where I throw up my hands and walk away. It’s not my fault that you can’t see how right I am.

That’s a hard truth to swallow, and it’s not going to be an easy behavior to change, but I don’t have a choice. It HAS to change… Thanks for reading and for the well-wishes!

  • Arthur Olcot on That Awkward Moment When I Started Channeling Brent Ozar:
I think the metaphor “My job is not to dig a moat around the castle. My job is to get on a horse,

leave the castle every single day, riding around the countryside” is absolutely brilliant and sums up the role perfectly!… I’m going to remember that one :)

I’ve never been accused of being brilliant before. Thanks!
  • zzx375 on Do You Need A Log Recovery Tool?:
Good information in the post. I have used the Apex tool in a production situation and it enabled me to identify the person who had deleted all of those rows.
  • David Caughill on That Awkward Moment When I Started Channeling Brent Ozar:
+1 for casting the development team as ‘peasants’. =)

Love this article – we had a similar epiphany around here this year, and it has led to some ‘lets fix it together’ moments that have been really productive, opened channels of communication, and smoothed out some old wrinkles.

Great article, thank you for sharing!

I’m glad you liked it. I have to say, the change has been amazing. It’s been nice to not go home in a bad mood every day.
