Why We Need Backups First

  • It should be shocking that this is still occurring all over the place. The online community have been talking about this forever and before that it was big in the printed media of our industry.

(Yes, I know it wasn't a simple overnight switch from one to the other.)

  • Sad to say, that I know of companies (and I do mean the plural) that still don't backup.

I also know of people whos job role has either been SysAdmins or those who want to think that they are DBAs still not taking backups let alone testing them. Best still I have seen this delegated to apprentices or people who see it as an unnecessary task because hardware is really good. Doesn't help when even management (who are still very technical) don't really insist on backups.

  • That's a fairly egregious breach of duty for some IT personnel in this case. The system was installed in 2009, and this event apparently occurred during a software upgrade in 2012.

Yeah, that's waaay too long to go without a backup system for such critical data.

    Arguably, 20/09 is OK. Just.
