Silly question about backup

    I have a dev server, running on 2014 and a prod which was recently upgraded, running on 2016. Is there a way to restore the backup from 2016 to 2014 without upgrading 2014 to 2016 1st? Sounds like a silly question but no question is dumb question.

    Unfortunately, there's no way to downgrade databases or their backups. You'll need to find another way to replicate prod data in your dev server, or simply upgrade it.

    PS. Not a silly or dumb question, IMO.

    We are going to upgrade it next week but developers need the data now to test. I am sure that's not new.

    Sometimes they just need data they haven't trashed. Worth checking - then you can just restore the last backup when it was running 2014.

    That is if you are backing up the databases on the dev servers.

    Guess I was thinking I'd hope they have the old production server one from the pre-upgrade, you know backup before the upgrade so that when it all goes to crap and you rollback, etc. Even though it's rare, I shouldn't be thinking. Life is easier that way.

    Yes, we do take full backups for dev servers every week and full, dif and tlog for Prod. We also have 6 months of backups for prod in place just in case if things go south.
