We recently installed one SQL 2016 server.
And I also downloaded and installed SQL management studio onto it. The version is 13.0.16000.28.
I also created maintainance plan on it.
Today I tried to edit the maintenance plan using the SSMS on the server, the tasks cannot be edited.
It shows error this task does not have a custom editor.
use the properties window to edit properties of this task. I also cannot see the toolbox.
Do I need to download and install data tools in order to edit maintenance plan?
Also starting from SQL 2016, whenever there is an upgrade of SSMS, do I need to uninstall the old one and install newer version? It seems there is no upgrade patch, but just uninstall and install new version.
Thanks,

No need to manually uninstall, just run the installer and it takes care of everything. But there is no 'upgrade' option ... so far, at least.

Thank you, will give a try.
Also my other part of the questions, if SQL data tool not installed, but just installed SSMS, can I edit or create maintenance plan?
It seems I cannot.

I saw your question, but I don't know the answer. I stopped using maintenance plans years ago.

I installed the data tool, then I am able to edit the maintainance plan.
It is surprised to me that maintenance plan can be no longer edited and created if SSDT tool not installed.
I thought they are separate, but it seems no longer true.

Thank you, good to know. This seems a new feature, we don not need to do so in previous versions.
I cannot try this now, for I installed Ssdt tool, the error no longer there. But will try on next new instance
