I would like to look into snap manager for sql server for back ups, where can I find good documentation? whether it is good solution and what are the caveats?
how does it affect the transaction logs?

In my opinion, no, it isn't a good solution. But the answer for you will depend on why you are considering this and what your environment looks like. Have you spoken to the vendor to check whether it's even viable?

NetApp has a lot of documentation on this. There are plenty of caveats to think about with SnapManager backups and the placement of database files should be considered when implementing the solution. One of the bigger issues, and why file placement matters, is that SnapManager backups are volume based not file based so it works differently from many others. If there are volumes shared with other databases, everything on that volume is affected during a backup of just one database. You would want to read the requirements and backup options to see if it's a workable option for you.
