Applying Security Updates to SQL Server

  • I currently have a SQL Server that is build level:

    10.50.40002009.100.4000.0SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 (SP2)

I'm wanting to bring it up to 2009.100.4042.0.

Do I need to run both of the below security updates or just 4042?

10.50.40422009.100.4042.03045313 MS15-058: MS15-058: Description of the security update for SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 GDR:

10.50.40332009.100.4033.02977320 MS14-044: Description of the security update for SQL Server 2008 R2 Service Pack 2 (GDR)

  • There's nothing in the KB articles that 4042 contains the 4033 fixes so I am going to say both.

Is there any reason your not considering SP3 10.50.6000

Thanks Anthony. It's confusing isn't it that MS don't mention these things because naturally as with CUs and SPs you don't have to apply them 1 by 1.

The vendor of the database doesn't want us to apply SP3 unfortunately, said it's outside of their support scope.
