Reporting Services expertise

  • We have some analyst staff who are coming from a Crystal Reports background and converting their reports. They're looking for some in-depth Reporting Services training and a person to bounce some questions off.

As DBA my experience is mostly in administering and maintaining the SSRS services. Their questions are more geared towards developing reports. Does anyone have any recommendations and links to good training curriculum, or references for a pure SSRS guru?

  • Yes,

Wise owl tutorials is a good place to start they are free. I am currently helping my Company which was a 100% crystal over to SSRS. I do SSRS training but it would have to go through my company. Trained several developers from crystal to SSRS. The trick is showing them that SSRS is so much easier to deal with and to quit thinking crystal as it overcomplicates things. Our report writers were ready to leave crystal on day one of learning SSRS.

Have then get SQLServerCentral (SSC) accounts and ask questions here. SSC is a goldmine. There are 7 forums dedicated to SSRS specifically, the Stairway to SQL Server Reporting Services[/url] by MVP Jessica Moss and a bunch of blog posts about SSRS.

"I cant stress enough the importance of switching from a sequential files mindset to set-based thinking. After you make the switch, you can spend your time tuning and optimizing your queries instead of maintaining lengthy, poor-performing code."

  • When I made the same switch myself, about 5 years ago, I used the 2008 version of this book... Microsoft SQL Server 2012 Reporting Services 4/E

It had me up and running in SSRS very quickly (less than a week). Then again, I personally learn best with hands on, step-by-step, tutorials. So that particular book was perfect for me.

  • Thanks to all. Very helpful.
