New SQL Server 2016 and Editing SSIS Packages from 2012

  • Hello,

What is the correct version of SSDT or Visual Studio (or whatever they are calling it now) that needs to be installed so that I can modify SSIS packages on SQL Server 2016 that were built on SQL Server 2012?  Also, should I install Integration Services when doing the SQL Server install or do that as part of the SSDT install?

    Some background . . .

I am in the process of building a new SQL server to replace our current one that is running Win Server 2006 R2.  The current one is SQL Server 2012 and the new one will be SQL Server 2016.  After spending several days on this I found that I was unable to run SSIS packages on the new server that were built on the old server.  The DTExec utility would show the following errors:

The version of Destination - adstudents09_txt is not compatible with this version of the DataFlow.

The destination was a flat file.  I also found that when I created a new SSIS package with the Import Export wizard it would run just fine but if I modified it within Visual Studio and try to run it again, I would get the same error message.  After fighting with this for a couple of days, and since the server in question is a VM and I have the time, I just wiped it out and am starting over with a fresh build.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
