Patching clustered node

  • I have 4 node cluster. I would need to patch all nodes right?

I can't just update one with recent service pack and leave other 3 as is

    Thanks

Practically you could leave without patching other 3 nodes, but HIGHLY NOT RECOMMENDED. You can fail over to other nodes when you are patching a node. Ideally you would want your windows and sql versions patches at same level across all nodes.

Absolutely agreed. You should have all OS and SQL at the same version across the board. If you have a failover cluster, patch the inactive nodes, fail over and then do the previously-active nodes. I've never done a balanced cluster myself, so I won't try to offer any advice based on something I've never done.

Depends what instances are running which nodes?

A little more detail on your configuration might help 😉
