Hortonworks are pushing Apache Atlas as a tool to manage Enterprise metadata.
From what I can see so far it is very early days for this particular project.
I went to a Hadoop meetup and the presenter raised the points highlighted in the article, that there are no agreed standards for metadata.
In his opinion more big vendors need to get behind http://hortonworks.com/press-releases/hortonworks-ibm-and-pivotal-harmonize-on-open-data-platform-vision-to-accelerate-big-data-solutions/ for something like Atlas to be a success.
Another point he raised was when vendors claim that you can query a product using ANSI standard SQL you should ask which version. One or two only support SQL92 which is 24 years old where you could do very little with the feature set

From what I can see, there is little support for SQL standards. This is not a good thing.
