Data Collector and Baseline Data Capture

  • Hi

I just want some opinions on which choice to make. Our company has never captured any baseline metrics in our sql server environment. Now this is my job. I have implemented the Data Collector but I have a lot to learn to decipher reports.

Recently I have taken a Pluralsight course by Erin Stellato on Benchmarking and Baselines for SQL Server. Now I'm wondering what I should implement.

Would you give me your thoughts on these options? Which approach would be best for a newbie?

    Thanks

    Kathy

  • There are many ways to deal with this, just depends what your goal is. Typically i collect H/W and SQL Server related metrics so that i can tick and tie these two together to see how were things in past. For Server related, start with perfmon @ 15 secs ( you can go more granular if you want) capture metrics related to disk, memory,CPU and N/W. If you want to make it simple and easy why not purchase a tool if you have enough budget? Last week someone was asking similar question, there are some good comments out there, you can take a look http://www.sqlservercentral.com/Forums/Topic1742110-3411-1.aspx#bm1742321

  • Thank You!
