When I convert the recovery mode to Full from Simple and try to back up the log, the system says that is not possible because recovery mode is Simple. I must be forgetting a step. Help please.

Take a full or differential backup.

I can't tell if this is sarcasm or not, but Gail is (obviously) correct. Before you can take a transaction log backup you need to take a full (or diff) backup first, because until you do the database is operating in "pseudo-simple" mode.
