Ok I am baffled. On a dev box with sql 2012 I tried to install SP3 and SP2. No errors says it completes but look at version, still on SP1. I do notice the box at bottom which will tell you where the log file will be written is blank. No errors in event logs either. Tried sp2 and sp3 got same result. I am admin on the box and I did chose run as administrator

What's the file name of the patch? What's the exact version of SQL Server on that machine (SELECT @@Version)?
Are there multiple instances on that server?

Was a log generated when you tried to apply the patches? Success, failure, cancel it should log. The log should be located in:
Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\110\Setup Bootstrap\Log
