On one of our PCs after installing SSMS 2016, we get the following error when trying to start it.
SSME.EXE - System Error
The program can't start because api-ms-win-crt-runtime-l1-1-0.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.
I've done some research and it seems the consensus is to reinstall the VS C++ runtime. When trying to do this, I get and Access denied. I found some references that this all goes to crap because of some Windows update that was released in December 2015.
Has anyone seen this problem and successfully resolved it other than just wiping the PC clean and starting over? I thought we were past this DLL he77 issue!
Thanks!

> After the updates are installed, restart your computer
> Download the Visual C++ Redistributable
> Run the vc_redist.x64.exe (64-bit) or vc_redist.x86.exe (32-bit) and select Uninstall
> Run the .exe again and select Install

Thanks for the reply. Looks like our PCs are controlled by GPOs on Windows updates. So I'm going to have to look into this more and give it a try.
