Going for Azure SQL

    Hello Folks:

    I've used SQL server (as a backend to Access) for many years now. I'm considering testing the waters of Azure SQL, but I've a few questions, first:

    • Can I create tables, edit table structure, work with table relationships in SSMS (as the GUI)? If not what GUI tool does Microsoft provide for working with the tables?
    • Have you worked in Azure? If so, what is your advice? What do you like? What are your concerns?

    Yes, you can use SSMS. And many other data modeling and design tools.

    You second question is fairly broad. I suggest you read and watch the materials available via the Azure website, plus watch some sessions from PASS events, then come back and ask some more specific questions.

    I've been working with it since the beginning. It's actually... just functional. Most of what you need to do is just there. Yeah, there are some limits, but you'd be surprised how little they actually impact you. The only negative is also one of the greatest positives; it moves very quickly. You need to be ready to learn on an ongoing basis.

    In addition to SSMS, a lot of 3rd party vendors are actively supporting Azure SQL Database. I know SQL Sentry is. My company, Redgate Software is as well.

    Check out Grant's lecture on SQL Azure on the SQLBITS website. Great info there.
