Need a license if we have our subscription on a sql 2012 express instance?

  • I sorry I don't know what this category would fall under so I posted here. But, does anybody know if we have a sql replication and the subscriber instance is a sql 2012 express instance? The publisher is a licensed sql 2012 instance. Appreciate the information.

  • SQL Express is a free, limited version of SQL Server.

  • I have never been able to find a definitive answer from Microsoft in their licencing documents regarding replication.

After chasing them up one time, the answer I got was that this fell under the Multiplexing clause.

Put simply you need a licence for the SQL Server on the publisher for each client connected to the subscriber.

If anyone has any information or reference that tells me otherwise I would be very happy to hear about it.

  • Thanks guys for the informative information! Phil thanks for the link that makes a lot of sense. Appreciate the information.

  • Talk to your license reseller before you buy any licences. Explain your situation to them including the SQL Server versions and editions you hope to use.

SQL Express may be free, but it still has a license. AFAIK that license allows it to be a subscriber to a replication publication for no additional cost.
