Getting used to new databases and environments

  • Hi all,

Started a new job on Monday and I finally got access to development environment. Can anyone recommend a fast and efficient way to get used to the database environment? I know SQL has a database diagram, but when I try to join tables together, I get a message that asks if I want to commit the changes. Is there a way that I can see the relationships, joins, etc without committing? Or am I just not using the database diagram correctly?

    Thank you all in advance,

    Dave

The database diagram is a look at the actual tables including foreign keys. If you add them in the diagram tool they are being added to the database. If the tables in there do not have links that is a good indication that there are no foreign keys.

  • The database diagram tool is a lightweight data modeling tool. At least until you have a diagram created that matches your schema.
