Hi - I've been put in a situation where I have a number of SQL DB's running on 2005/2008 which I have responsibility for. I've been given limited information so am looking at a starting point to determine where I go from here.
Has anyone been put in a similar situation and if so what steps did you take to get a handle on the situation?
I have of course ensured there is a backup strategy in place to secure the data. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Regards

Start with the backups, as you've already done. But, talk to the business about Recovery Point Objectives and Recovery Time Objectives to ensure your backups meet those requirements. Also, make sure you have integrity checks set up. Set up backup testing.
After that, statistics are extremely important. Also, security. Make sure only the bare minimum is set up (although if this has been running on its own, everyone probably has 'sa' and changing that will be a fight). You'll want to get monitoring in place to ensure you know if it goes down and how it's behaving. The main point of running a server is being able to recover from a disaster, so that's your first and primary goal.
