Add replication environment to a new cluster

  • I have a Distributor server and a Subscriber server that is live and replicating. However, they are not part of a cluster. We recently decided to add those servers to a cluster. Do I need to redo all my replication or is there a way I can keep the replication going and add the servers to the cluster?

  • How do you migrate or plan your existing server to cluster?

  • Forgive me, but I don't understand your question. Both servers are not part of any cluster. One of the options was to migrate the data to a SAN and then add the servers to a cluster. But can I keep the naming of the server and instance the same so it won't impact replication?

If they (or it) was not installed as a single node SQL Cluster, you cannot simply upgrade the server to a cluster. You will need to plan an upgrade/migration.

This by its nature, will involve scripting and rebuilding replication on the new cluster. You can do this without the need to re-initialise subscribers though.

  • Thanks for the reply.

Just to make sure I understand, I'll need to upgrade the Distributor and Subscriber to a cluster. Does that mean I will need to reinstall a new instance on each server or can I keep mostly everything the same and just move the data to a shared disk? Sorry for the beginner-type questions. I'm not a DBA by trade so I just want to make sure I know the correct process.
