BIDS 2005 Retro Install

  • Afternoon all,

The organisation I work for has some (300 +) SSIS packages created in BIDS/VS2005. I've not used 2005 for ages since most everything else I've worked on here has been done in 2008 or later so I don't have the 2005 flavour of the software installed on my machine.

Now a requirement has occurred for some of these 2005 packages to be modified so I'm trying (in vain) to install BIDS 2005 - at the moment for internal reasons upgrading these packages to a later version is out of the question.

Since I have 2008 and 2012 versions of SQL server installed the 2005 version seems to be reluctant (read "just won't") install as it sees the later software and says there's nothing to install.

Is there a way to get BIDS 2005 to retrospectively install side by side with the later versions - I really don't want to have to remove the 2008 and 2012 versions and reinstall from 2005 if I can help it. I have managed to install Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Database Professionals but this doesn't include the BIDS components - is it perhaps possible to add the BIDS components?

    Many thanks in advance,

    Chris

Keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up.

  • Have you tried installing SQL 2005 on your box? I have 2005, 2008, and 2012 version of SQL Server and BIDS installed on mine. I know I installed 2005 after 2008 because most of what I support is 2008 and I grudgingly had to install 2005 to support some old packages on a server we can't get upgrade approval for.

I don't remember having any issues installing SQL Server 2005, with BIDS on my Windows 7 WS. I just don't run the SQL services for 2005.

Learning something new on every visit to SSC. Hoping to pass it on to someone else.

  • Quick thought, I have workstations with full install of all versions of SQL Server from 2000 to current, all of the installs were done in the order of the versions, almost all attempt to do otherwise have failed.

    😎

Alternatively you can create a clean VM, probably the least hassle.
