In which book is log shipping .wrk files mentioned?

  • I have read the MCTS book, Books Online but did not find mention of .wrk files anywhere. Could you please let me know in which book this is covered.Interviewers are asking these kind of questions in interviews and hence i want to know where i can find it(source/book)

  • it might not be mentioned, as it's a transitory file extension:

    CategoryDatabase Files

    File Format Description

Database backup file created by SQL Server, a relational database management system (RDBMS); saves a backup of transaction logs while they are being copied to secondary storage; renamed to ".trn" when the backup is complete.

The ".wrk" extension is assigned to the transaction log backup file temporarily during the backup operation. Therefore, if you see a WRK file that has not changed for a long period of time, it is possible that the backup operation failed.

That would be a very cheeky question by an interviewer hah - learnt something new though 🙂

  • If these info are not found any books, how does the person who answers the question gets to know such things? Just curious to know

  • if the interviewer asked "which book" then he probably is not the best person to interview candidates but on ther other hand if he just wanted to know if you are aware of the file extension and by extension the behaviour of log shipping then its a good question to ask.

Where do you find answers for qustions like these , in your server is the best answer I can give you. No amount of book knowlegde is enough to replace hands on

  • Thanks a lot for replying Jayant. You said "In your server", actually i did not understand that.

Im rather well rounded as far as sql and replication goes, and i did not know this. I just googled wrk files and found the answer.

I would challenge this as unimportant and trivial compared to knowing how to set up some replication. Anyone asking this level of sql trivia is not asking the right questions.

This ranks there with having to k ow that google downloads are named .crcdownload until complete, or something similar.

  • You are right sir. However here in India, due to high number of job seekers, interviewers are asking such kind of questions. I was not selected for not being able to answer this question and felt very sad.

  • Tbh, it's a stupid question which tells nothing about a candidate's ability to do the job (unless they are being hired to develop a Trivial Pursuit game)

  • Dear Gail Shaw Sir,

As i am a junior dba, i want to learn advanced dba internals and would like to become expert. Could you please suggest a good book/material

  • All of them, and at least 5 years.

Seriously, there's no one book that's going to make you an expert. Read everything you can get your hands on. Test everything out that the books describe, try everything that they show.

  • What I meant with In your server is , if you have set up log shipping and monitored it regulalry your likely to have come across this file type atleast once. Basically At your server = Hands ON i.e not in a book

  • Jayanth sir,

Thanks. Can you please suggest me a good book where i can gain knowledge of dba internals(mirroring internals, log shipping internals)
