Hello experts,
I am an "accidental DBA" who was learned a lot about managing SQL Server from within its tools, and our servers are on SQL 2012 now. However, our systems group handles building the servers and clusters before handing them over to me. I have reached the point where I want to learn more, though, and would like to understand how to create a SQL 2012 cluster from scratch so I know what's going on. Right now it is a bit of a mystery show, which makes me feel like I don't fully grasp what a proper cluster build involves.
Is there a way I can learn this area without having to spend too much money, such as AWS, Azure, or VMs? It doesn't need to be some powerful setup, just something that has all the working parts to teach me the essentials.
I can certainly get a little help from work, but because systems administration is not my main role I don't think I could get a whole cluster build course paid for. (Although I guess I could ask.) I just want to assemble a document that can allow me to walk myself through building a cluster which in turn might help me comprehend my existing database clusters better as well.
Thanks for any help!

Perry Whittle has an excellent stairway series that covers a lot of information on clustering and AlwaysOn. He tackles it from the ground up.
